Assignment HDC1-1: Distinguishing organizational goals from watershed management goals

Note: If you are currently working with or for a watershed group, use your own group for this exercise. If you are not currently working with or for a watershed group, read the article by Bonnell and Koontz in your reading packet and use the group described in the article as your watershed group.

One of the first steps in addressing organizational development issues is to identify specific organizational goals, as distinct from watershed management goals, and develop strategies to accomplish those goals. Write down 5-10 organizational development issues your group is struggling with currently or will likely face in the near future. Those issues may involve clarifying purpose, fundraising, financial management, board recruitment, distribution of workload, creating structures and procedures for communicating and decision making, building relationships with other organizations, or any other number of issues specifically related to building and sustaining a strong organization.

For each issue, write one or two organizational goals. For each goal, identify one or two action items for accomplishing the goal. Discuss potential obstacles. How much time and money might be required to accomplish these goals? What are some possible consequences of failing to accomplish your goals? Explain.
